Born and raised in Maastricht, after studying Biomedical Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, I returned to the south of the Netherlands to study Health Sciences (Master Mental Health) at Maastricht University. Afterwards, I completed my PhD at the Department of Psychiatry & Neuropsychology, focusing on the relationship between nutrition, genes, and mental health. Subsequently, as a postdoctoral researcher I investigated the influence of lifestyle on brain health, from the viewpoint of dementia prevention. At the Department of Health Promotion, I currently study the role of the social environment in health behaviour. In my spare time, I enjoy doing fun things with my family and going for long walks or a run in nature.

In my current research, we collaborate with residents of vulnerable neighbourhoods in South Limburg to unravel how social contacts contribute to health protection. By doing so, we aim to contribute to enhancing social health in the community and improving health advice for the future.

Recommended by me: Rental Family – Against the backdrop of loneliness in a crowded city, this film nicely illustrates how profound the human need for social connection truly is.
